My Newest Addiction: A Discovery of Witches!

4/16/2019

I've never read the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness, but when I saw the trailer for the television series, A Discovery of Witches, which is based upon her series, I knew it was something I had to watch. Paranormal television is right up my alley. It debuted in the UK in September 2018. Unfortunately, we in the United States had to wait, and I forgot about it...until I was scrolling through my TV guide and episode two would be airing on a local channel.  My quest to find the first episode began! Needless to say after watching it, I had no other option but to subscribe to SundanceNow where I could binge all eight episodes of the first season. And A Discovery of Witches became my newest addiction!
I wrote a more in-depth review of the show and shared it on Vocal.Media so I won't go into too much here except to say if you haven't seen it, and you're a fan of paranormal romance, watch it!

There is history, forbidden romance, witches, vampires, action, magic, drama, and so much more. A lot is packed into eight episodes, and bonus! The show has been renewed for second and third seasons as well. I can only hope for more as Matthew Goode and Teresa Palmer bring magic to the screen in their roles as Matthew Clairmont and Dr. Diana Bishop.

Have you seen it?

Is Watching TV A Waste of Time or Beneficial?

1/27/2019

For Christmas, I received a book with 300 writing prompts. One of the questions was if television was a complete waste of time or is beneficial in some way by providing enrichment and relaxation. I do watch TV to relax and to be entertained, but I also watch it to be educated, especially historical programs, cooking shows, and design shows.

Watching TV allows my brain to stop focusing on the work that's still left to be done and any problems of the day. For however long I choose to watch, I can tune out the world. That kind of relaxation is important because you can't be "on" 24/7.

Keith Rhys, who works with health professionals to help them become online authorities, says that watching TV can help you change your perspective and inspire creativity.  He has gotten blog post ideas from watching television as have I. Inspiration is essential for writers, especially when we might be going through a bit of a slump.

Of course, moderation matters. If you're zoning out in front of the television for several hours a day, that might not be a good thing. LIfeadvancer.com says that, according to a 2015 study by JAMA Psychiatry, people who watched more than three hours of TV a day performed worse on cognitive tests than those who didn't watch as much. And we all know that sitting in front of the box for too long isn't good for you physically. So restricting how much you watch can also be a good thing.

What's your take on watching television?

I'm a TV Talker

And since I love talking about the shows I'm currently addicted to, I signed up with MoviePilot.com. I didn't want to inundate all of my readers here who come to read about everything but television so I separated my two loves. At MoviePilot, I talk about Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, the actors who play the characters, and I'm sure more programs will come into play.

As I mentioned in a previous post, my dream job is to write for television. To do that, I need more experience and exposure.  Just another reason why I'm branching out. You'll still find me here, of course, especially since Two Truths and a Lie starts on June 7th, but I'll only talk TV occasionally here. If you do want to follow me on MoviePilot.com, you are more than welcome. Just click on the image above. Hope to see you there!

When a plot point doesn't make sense

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD! DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 28TH'S EPISODE OF LEGENDS OF TOMORROW!
Hopefully, if you haven't watched tonight's episode of DC's Legends of Tomorrow, you have already left this page. I really don't want to spoil any scenes! With that said...

What was Kendra thinking? She had a chance to kill Vandal Savage, and instead, she chose to believe that only he could bring back Carter's memory. This was wrong on so many levels!

First, why would she trust a man who has killed her and Carter over 200 times?  Trust should not have even entered into the equation. Does she really believe she will be rewarded by the return of Carter's memory for sparing Savage's life?

Second, she has been with Ray for over two years (if you count the time travel), and she has seen what he can do scientifically as well as Dr. Stein. Did she not stop to consider they could help her? That ship has brilliant minds aboard, and Kendra is believing Savage alone is the only one capable of returning Carter's memory? Did she not just figure out how to kill Savage on her own with just flashbacks and a bracelet?

Third, with everything she's seen and done this season, did she really think restoring a man' s memory will be too difficult?  She and Ray have lived in the 1950s. She has met and talked to her future self. Ray built a beacon that would attract the crew when they were stuck in the 1950s. They have outrun the Time Masters again and again, and, let's not forget how this crew has rounded up their younger selves for safekeeping. And restoring a memory is going to stump them?

Fourth, how could she risk everyone's life, including Ray's? Did she not consider what will happen to Ray with Savage about the ship?  The writers made her come across as incredibly selfish in this scene. She's not even sure she wants to be with Carter, but she's willing to let Rip's wife and son die until she's sure?

I'm sorry, but this was a glaring error on the writers' part, and personally, I think they should have allowed her to split Savage's head open like a grapefruit. While I understand they needed to keep Savage alive for the plot, but using Kendra in such an absolutely unbelievable way was completely unnecessary.  There had to be another way. Look at the many times Savage has escaped before.

I hope the writers can salvage Kendra's character after this and restore her determination to make things right.

Oh, one more thing of note: what happened to Stein? One minute he's fine, the next he's been stabbed, and we don't know by who or how it happened. I'm still confused over that one!
