How Much Does Your Faith Mean To You?

5/25/2019

That was a question I read in today's devotional from a wonderful book, The Illustrated Words of Jesus for Wisdom. It talked about the persecution of Christians and martyrdom. How much would you be willing to risk for your faith in Christ? It's a powerful question, one I've asked myself before.

My faith means everything to me. I couldn't imagine life without it. To have nothing to believe in, to me, would be suffocating. I don't believe in God and Jesus because I don't have another choice. I believe because I can't imagine not believing.

I don't know what else to say about this song, but wow.  The power of connection can heal a lot of wounds.  And this guy's voice is phenomenal.

Celebrate Yourself On Your Birthday!

Monday was my 51st birthday. I don't mind admitting my age because getting older doesn't bother me. Some people will say it's just another year, or it's only a number. But I say it's the start of another year of life which means I'll have more chances to do what my heart's telling me to do, more opportunities to grow and learn, and more time to spend with the people I love the most!

Also, a birthday is a great time for a little indulgence! I scheduled several things this week like a mani/pedi, a haircut, teeth whitening, and I bought some new clothes, books, and some furniture and accessories for my house which is undergoing major renovations!  (Pictures coming soon!)  Overall, it's been a great week, and I'm thankful to start another year on this planet!

Do you celebrate your birthday yourself? How do you pamper yourself?

More Questions About Me

Straight from the book, 3000 Questions About Me, comes the next set of questions and answers about yours truly! (I'm learning stuff about myself I didn't even know!)

  1. What do you think about the "tiny house" craze, and is it for you? I love watching shows about these tiny houses. I've seen some fantastic little homes, and while I'd love to visit some of them, I could never live in one of them.
  2. What quality or trait do you possess that could make people see you as a warrior? Tenacity. I never give up. If there's a problem, I know there's a solution.
  3. Have you ever faked your way through something? Yes. A job...well, at least the first part of it anyway. When I was being interviewed for my first job in a law office (I was only 19), I told the lawyer that I knew a word processing program that I didn't actually know. I got the job and to do some really quick on-the-job learning. My boss never found out, and by the end of my time there, I had a new job skill, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend this as a way of getting a job.
  4. Is there ever a good time to be confrontational? Absolutely. When someone is being bullied or harassed, I get involved. Always.
  5. Do you do what you say you're going to do? Yes, unless an emergency arises. Keeping my word is very important to me.

Breakthrough is more than a movie about a miracle

I went to see Breakthrough preparing for a movie about a miracle, which is exactly what it is. Fourteen-year-old John Smith falls through the ice and is underwater for fifteen minutes before CPR was started. Miraculously, he not only survives the traumatic event, he does so without any cognitive defects. Even leaving it at that, it's a great movie, but there's so much more to it.
Picture
There is, of course, a strong faith element present in the movie, but along with that comes a story of acceptance, of community, and unity.

Acceptance—Joyce Smith (portrayed by Chrissy Metz) doesn't like the new pastor who is portrayed by Topher Grace. She struggles to accept the changes in their church after his arrival and struggles to accept him as the head of the church.  It's only when Joyce's son, John, is injured that she comes to realize how deeply the pastor truly cares about people, including those who don't like him.

Community—From the business owner who called 911 to the healthcare professionals at both hospitals, it's clear that had one person, one cog in the wheel, so to speak, been missing, John Smith might not have recovered.  The lines of communication were open and strong, and this town meant business. They worked together flawlessly to save a young boy's life

Unity—The entire town comes together to not only pray for John's recovery but to take care of the Smith family as they spend their time at John's bedside.

Breakthrough is about so much more than a miracle. It's a snapshot of a town filled with dedicated, caring people, those who go out of their way for others. In reality, the movie is a wishlist for the world.

There are some songs...

that touch you, that stay with you long after the last note ends. That song, for me, is I Can Only Imagine by MercyMe.  I usually play it on repeat when I'm on longer trips. The lyrics are both powerful and hopeful, offering a promise of what's to come. Having lost two friends within the last two years, it reminds me that I'll see them again.
