The cover was just created for my newest novel, Connecting Strangers, and rather than do a cover reveal for it, I thought I'd have one of my readers put it together. The link is below. I've been writing romantic suspense since 2006, but recently I've been focusing more on straight suspense with some romantic elements thrown in. Now here's the weird reason. My brain keeps coming up with killers even creepier than the last one I wrote, and I find it necessary to partly tell the story from the killer's point of view so readers can see how really unstable he is. Sooooo...should it worry me that my mind conjures lethal, maniacal killers?
While all of my books, mostly, have a happy ending, I spend a lot of time making that killer into someone no one would want to meet in a dark alley. I know their pathological process, what sets them on edge, and what triggers their need to kill on a minute by minute basis. And I enjoy writing from their points of view. When I wrote my first killer in Burning Reflections, which was published by Samhain Publishing in 2007, I thought I'd never write another unhinged character quite like that one. Oh, how wrong I was. So if you're reading one of my suspense books, don't be surprised if you find yourself asking what was I thinking. As you can see, I wonder that myself.  I write every day. No matter what. I started this goal three years ago, and I've stuck to it, through good times and bad. It's required a lot of determination...like this past Sunday night when I was admitted to the hospital.
The admission happened so fast. I didn't have my laptop with me, and my phone wasn't charged enough for me to use my notepad. I had to save the battery for phone calls. So as I waited for a room, I began to look through my purse for scrap pieces of paper. I found two, but I knew that wouldn't be enough. We have some pretty terrific hospitals in Charleston staffed with fabulous nurses. So when I was finally ensconced in my room for the night, I took a chance and asked the nurse if she had a legal pad I could use. This was closing in on one in the morning. I figured she thought I was going to write out a will or something so I quickly told her I was a writer and that I had to write each night. She didn't have a pad, but she offered some computer paper. Voila! All I needed. I managed two full handwritten pages in between tests and attempting to sleep which is kind of like trying to take a nap in the middle of mortar fire. I'm not sure what I wrote is any good because I haven't had the courage to read it yet, but it doesn't matter. I put words on paper. Goal achieved. Insert virtual pat on the back here. |
